When in doubt place head between knees and scream Freaky Meat

so we’re kissing off july in style  and what a monster of a week or two we have planned..

Tonight we’re playing at The Dog’s Bollix, the bar where we had our first paying gig no more than 2 weeks after our chance meeting inception at The Jazz Bar. We will be  headlining Tom Reilly’sGordonia Premiere Afterparty‘ to celebrate the release of his film festival accepted documentary about Graham Gordon battling with the Waitakere City Council over his land, his cars and especially his very colourful tenants.Check out the film HERE. Well Tom is footing the bill for the after-party which we like because that means that it’s FREE for you guys, so come and grab yourselves a free slab of sizzling freaky meat tonight!

Then on Saturday night we have the massive SOULSTICE – a winter celebration of music and groove… well the spiel on their event page says:
From young rockers The Stickmen to the groove rap funk of KGB Allstars transitioning through slick guitar mind blowing of The Dave Alley Band into a zen freak shake up from Freaky Meat with a smooth soul funk highs of BlackSandDiva and a finale from Dj Dougie

Tickets $20/$15 from Titirangi Pharmacy & Titirangi Festival office 2nd Floor Lopdell House
7pm till late
Sat 24th July – cash bar only

so that will be a classic line up and also is nice for us to be playing on bill with Dave Alley who briefly played the congas for us during our brief early stint playing at The Bollix all those years ago.

The week after that we head down to Wellington for our first out of Auckland mini-tour to play at Poetry at OUR Edge of the Universe at the sumptuous Betty’s Bar to help them celebrate National Poetry Day. Check out their event HERE and of course if you are in Wellington you must come to our first gig there ever! We will be spending the weekend down there and will be playing the following Saturday and Sunday nights at The Hummingbird Restaurant which is handily located right next door.

We’ve been practicing a hell of a lot lately and in particular working on some new pieces, I am very happy to say that we have pretty much put the lid on 2 new pieces this week, Urbis Street Crossings & Freaky Meat (the song not the band..). we expect to test drive Urbis Street Crossings at the Gordonia Premiere Afterparty tonight, just one more reason to come..

As If all this excitement wasn’t enough we will be releasing our first studio recorded ‘Late-Night Kebab E.P’ which will feature: The Rapture, Rongo Pie-cart Penis Finger, Monkey Shines and Coffee Ambulance.

you can order your copy right now for our early bird special of only $5!!  simply send us an email at freakymeat.co.nz

Am i stoked with all this? You bet yer life I am

enjoy!

Wellington quakes in fear of the Freak Invasion

so the rumors are off the Ric-tor Scale and are all truer than any of National’s promises made before the last election, Freaky Meat are going to the turbulent political musical melting pot that is this fair nations capitol. I might have made the quaking in fear thing up.

Poetry at OUR Edge of the Universe

will be Freaky Meat’s inaugural toe dip into the font that is the burgeoning wellington music scene and damn were happy to be going.

So if you’re in Wellington you won’t want to miss this show

Poetry at OUR Edge of the Universe is a free evening of poetry performance, music, art, audience competitions and costume characters.

Hosted by the award-winning Bettys, you will be treated to performances from jazz/rock band Freaky Meat and celebrated poets Hinemoana Baker, James Brown, Ingrid Horrocks and Anna Livesey while poetry is projected on the walls.

Wandering IIML Masters poet characters await you for up-close-and-personal poetry readings – choose from, the Minstrel, Wood Nymph, Salvadore Dali, a Geisha Madam, Warrior Princess or Wartime Belle. Have more than one…or find the ‘plain-clothes’ poet for a free drink.

Let your inner poet out to play in the audience poem competition – bring a poem or write one on the night; winners will be awarded prizes and invited to read.

it will be Friday 30th July 2010 @ Bettys Function House and Bar, 32 Blair St, Wellington City. All are welcome and entry is free!

Out Hunting for some Freaky Meat

Yep The Freaks have been doing double shifts in the soul kitchen cooking up new meaty flavours twice a week in the lab; our latest being ‘The Lament of Paris’ a story of lust and dangerous not-so-unrequited love. When I first performed it (sans Meat) @Poetry Live I was asked ‘who the lucky girl was?’ Helen of Troy was my reply.. I’m thinking that maybe she’s a bit cougar for me by a few centuries and of course I’ve never been to Paris but the city was named after a man who fell in love with the wrong girl. Starting wars and all that just for a sweet smile and a wink, what was he thinking?? well this is my take on that and trust me, I know that ol’ chestnut of a feeling like the back of my (OMG WTF is That!) hand.

So ‘Paris’ started out as a lovely surf-rock tale of sweet unfetted love and sounded that way initially.. til about the 3rd practice session and post it’s performance debut at The Masonic in Devonport. and then The Freaks got their hands on it… lets just say Paris has got a little obsessional delusional on it shall we.. after my initial ‘what the F@#k have you done to my love song’ It started to grow on me. (like a tumor?)

What I can say is the new version is nailed and ready to be performed at The Freaky Meat – Karen HUNTER 3 gig on This Sat (26th June 10) night at the Juice Bar, Parnell.

This will be an awesome double up with us playing with the fantastic karenHUNTER3 and it’s FREE damnit so if you don’t come down for that then you don’t deserve any ‘puddin if ye don’t eat yer meat’ (weird Pink Floyd Ref.)

Hunter is a long-time Freak friend but we haven’t played with Karen since she jumped up on stage at The Odeon Lounge (god was the 04?)

Here’s what some other peeps say about her:

For those who know Káren’s music, no introduction is necessary, for those who don’t, think Michelle Shocked, Rickie Lee Jones, or even Sarah Jones of  “your revolution will not happen between these thighs” fame. Think melodic jazz infused female vocals, and stripped back accompaniment that is more country than folk. Think snare shuffles and guitars that meander, most of all think of story telling lyrics introduced by unstrained singing. Amplifier.co.nz

…her delivery is cool and illuminating. That she can switch from a dirty jazz-blues rhythm section arrangement to a simple guitar-picking delivery to spoken word reveals Hunter as a major New Zealand talent. From every turn, Rubble is one rough-cut gem of an album. Waikato Times

…..a cracked jazz balladeer; backed by hipster-jazz and creating a creepy mood for hushed spoken-word pieces and lazy bar-room blues, it is as if Hunter has unlocked her inner Rickie Lee Jones, tending also to touch on the spirit of Tom Waits … Rubble is a class act of an album – do your best to check it out. Dominion Post

Karen Hunter is a “ridiculously accomplished guitar-playing, singing, songwriting Aucklander whose performances are pithy, compassionate and insightful Metro magazine

A full bountiful voice matched with a wild sensitive spirit. Pavement magazine

Anyways if you want more goodies on K you should check out her site www.karenhunter.com

Freaky Meat are gonna rock The BYBR NZ Music Month Rock Showcase TONIGHT

Bright Yellow Beatle Records presents..

BYBR NZ Music Moth Rock Showcase 2010

I think this one is going out to all the real hipsters, god no I’m not talking paste faced iPhone waving, black stove pipe and casual sneakered ‘I’m not a goth’, too cool to show i’m enjoying anything and won’t even dance to the MintChicks, Indi-Kids, hell no.

I’m talking the real hipsters.

The raging bulls that are mad for life, that see the beauty of a crushed can in a gutter and the brilliance of society’s crimson sunset. That spurn mediocrity and will never wear a uniform comfortably or correctly. Who don’t give a flying rats arse that it Wednesday Night and still want to burn for music, for love and care not for the beat as long as there is one that moves you.

That know they are a mess and revel in the Chaos because it is Alive, because it is Real. That still have a modicum of freedom in a world where slavery has evolved into a many skinned beast that will kiss your hand as it slips on the shackles. Every 52 Hr min wage job, every high powered soulless servitude, every crappy piece of processed sustenance that seduces you, the dumbing down and selling out that they can never accept willingly even when it is beaten into their system.

That burns and refuses to die.

that’s who.

Those who understand the ethos of Burroughs, Bukowski, Rimbaud, Orwell while dancing to Waits, Avery and Purple Rain. (yes, Purple Rain, got a problem with that buddy) Who could Never break a butterfly on a wheel, who Would give a damn & a dime to a brother or a sister, that Knows the path leads to paradise and decay, That can not sleep for dreaming and wakes driven by desires.

The Real Rebels

That’s who I am playing for tonight

and Damn we Are going to Rock

who rocked the Rock Out!, freaky meat that’s who

wow the Rock Out! was a blast, we decided to make a nice taylor-made all rock set for this and boy did we raise the roof! So good to see so many people blowing up the dancefloor and to a rock-poetry band no less..

Bright Yellow Beetle Records presents at the Juice Bar

It was such a really nice vibe and great to be able to cut loose in a rock fashion like that. Thanks Tabatha from Bright Yellow Beatle Records for sorting that out for us, though we secretly suspect she just wanted her favorite bunch of Freaks to play at her party (It just ‘happened’ to be her birthday that night). Thanks so Much Melissa Pronk, Jen & Tamisan Taylor for coming and taking such wicked photos and then being so awsome as to send them back to us. damn straight.

Also mad love to Callum, Little Jen, sunil, Cullum, Kiri, Paul & Christie and Otic Mace and of course the mighty Tabatha.

Photo by Melissa Pronk So for Rock Out we really felt we should put on what we have been developing as our ‘rock set’. We love that we have been able to play everything from weddings (yes we have) to RSA family shows (hat’s off bitches… no seriously) to mega theatre lasers in yer face mad metal rock amongst Indi/goth/pop/art/metal bands and do poetry, yes well maybe spoken work in a more contemporary  musical context.

The only downside to the Rock Out was that even though there were 2 yes 2 soundmen, all they seemed capible of giving us through the foldback was bass and tons of it. “sorry, what, more bass with that?? doh, i think they want more bass up the front of house cus the lead guitarist keeps waving strangely at me…” look we’re not one’s to bitch, it’s just some people either need to go and get some training (RTFM) or pay more attention in class before they go getting paid to be sound-people as we’re sure some bands oughta practice in their garages before inflicting themselves on the public (not a slight at ANY of the cool bands that played Rock out, they were fantastic!)

Photo by Melissa Pronk All bitching aside. we had a damn fine time and it was nice to see a few of our crowd from the old days of playing at Rakinos as well as close friends and loved ones and to be able to cut loose with a ‘horns up’ to rock and muddafrickkn roll’ style of party rock which seems worlds away from our jazz fusion and more intimate style (ala Titiragi Music Festival RSA gig) we are really enjoying being independant lable-wise and being able to not have to stick to one particular style to appeal to a particular industry market neche and bull****  like that and plan to experiment in all of the musical styles that fit our own fancies, yes you can expect a freak country song or freak disco number at any time now mwa ahaha.

to this end we have implemented some intensive writing sessions for new stuff for our next album as most of the non mixing and Photo By Melissa Pronkmastering work on our first album is pretty much in the can now and after the heap of practices and gigs we have have done recently we’re pretty tight on that stuff as any of you who have come to our gigs can attest to.

Our next gig will be at the Bright Yellow Beetle May NZ Music month extravaganza at The Kings Arms On Wed 26th so if you wanna get your Freak-on with us you better  shuffle yer feet down to that one..

we’ll be playing with Initial, Invader Cain & Mile High. so it should be another night of  mad Rock til you can’t stop and if you holla back the stage we may just throw you out our new ‘Monkey Shines‘ single.

go on, go on, you know you want to..
